Ideas For 18 Great Things To Do In Farsley, Leeds

September 9, 2023

Farsley, in my opinion, is the coolest suburb in Leeds. A lively village, centered around a regenerated old mill – a hub which Farsley’s residents gravitate towards thanks to its creative atmosphere and places to eat and drink.

The village is on the radar of everyone in Leeds thanks to a steady stream of new openings including a rather special gin bar, a gorgeous yoga studio and a cosy bookshop where you can easily spend a weekend afternoon. Plus, it’s got a train station close by which is a huge plus side for those visiting from Leeds, or for those commuting into the city centre for work.

Whether you live in Farsley, or are visiting with friends and family, it’s an unforgettable place in Leeds and a happy medium between city life and rural living. If you’re visiting here for the day, or wondering whether it’s your place to set up home, here are some of the best things to do in Farsley.

Truman Books

One of the newest additions to Farsley is Truman Books. Opened in 2021 by Amanda, Truman Books is a little haven at the end of Town Street where you can find the latest fiction and non-fiction books. Search for your next read with a coffee and cake and if there’s something you can’t find, you can order it in to pick up on your next visit.

Truman Books also do special events, inviting in authors to sign books and chat about their latest novel. If you’re a young family, the downstairs is a dedicated children’s section – perfect for those slow weekend days and holiday activities.

Pizza at Grumpys

If you like pizza, you’ll love Grumpys. Here you’ll find a great atmosphere, great service, and even greater pizza. In fact, this place is award winning, so you know it’s going to be good.

Delicious regulars such as the Phil (tomato sauce, mozzarella, basil oil, fresh basil) and the Simon (tomato sauce, mozzarella, nduja, wood-fired chicken, smoked mozzarella), keep locals coming back again and again. However, keep your eyes peeled for an ever changing selection of specials.

If pizza isn’t your thing though, or you fancy some extras to go along with your meal, try out the roasted potatoes and feta, the panzanella, and the vegan slaw.

Out of all the places to eat in Farsley, this is one of my favourites. Especially when the sun is shining and you can sit outside with friends devouring good pizza and cocktails.

Things to know: If you need parking, there are spaces off Charles Street and if you need an accessible table, just give them a call in advance of your booking.

Coffee and Cake at Mill Kitchen

Whether you’re a family with kids or a parent spending time with their baby, maybe you’ve just finished your yoga class or you’re looking for a change of scenery to work from, or you could be catching up with friends or on a breakfast date, Mill Kitchen is a space that truly welcomes everyone.

I love coming here on a Friday afternoon to do some writing. Sitting by the window with a coffee and cake (all cakes are made in house at their on-site bakery) is a little bit of me time after a busy week. However, I also love coming here for breakfast – the beans on toast is *chef’s kiss* delicious.

If you’re working at home, Mill Kitchen is a great place to pick up some lunch – try the sausage roll or a salad from the counter!

It does get busy here on a weekend so make sure you’re here early to guarantee a table. Alternatively, when the sun is shining, sit outside in their little suntrap!

Things to know: Dogs are welcome here and there’s car parking available on the street and also in the few reserved spaces in the car park. Vegan options are available here too for food and drink.

Beer at Amity Brew Co

Another addition to Sunnybank Mills is Amity Brew Co. Not only does this place have gorgeous comfy leather sofas, and seats where they actually brew their beer but their terrace is a gorgeous sun trap as well! If the sun isn’t shining though, there are heaters outside, and indoors is a really cosy place to enjoy a drink or two.

For a good pint, choose from their core range of Waterpistol, Festoon or Sunnybank or try their special editions, guest beers or collaborations.

If beer isn’t your thing, wine, cider and a selection of spirits are also available. Summer usually brings along a frozen margarita too so keep your eyes open for that!

Amity also does a lot of events such as their Examity Pub Quiz Night or a tour of their brewery with a tasting of some of their beers!

Things to know: Dogs are welcome here so bring them along and it’s a super welcoming environment for families and kids too! There’s also plenty of parking outside Amity Brew Co as well.

Cocktails at TEST Bar

One of my favourite places in Farsley which has succeeded in turning a non-gin drinker (I’d go as far to say I was a gin hater), into someone who absolutely adores a gin cocktail.

TEST Bar creates such a special experience that I’m sure you’ll want to come back again and again. With seating room only and table service from the more than wonderful owners, you can just sit back and relax as your cocktails are meticulously made.

And what spectacular cocktails they are. The Egg is a current favourite of mine with its citrus flavour and vanilla foam. You can’t go wrong with any of the other cocktails on offer from the menu currently inspired by Culture.

If you don’t want a cocktail but still fancy a drink, grab a local beer or a wine from their carefully curated menu.

Yoga Class at Anahata Yoga

Run by the lovely Sarah and located above Mill Kitchen, Anahata Yoga is a space of calm in Farsley.  The goal with this studio is to make yoga inclusive for everyone and with a variety of classes, Anahata Yoga does just that.

Take time after work with the Relax and Unwind session, try out a Vinyasa Flow or do an Express Session to get moving in the morning. With workshops and pregancy yoga classes, there’s no excuse not to give yoga a go and I reckon Anahata Yoga in Farsley is the best place to start, or carry on, your practice.

From beginner weaving sessions to screen printing workshops there is a lot going on here at Sunnybank Mills. You can hire out looms, learn how to print on fabric, or take a go at lino printing.

Enjoy a Walk Along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal

Get out and about in the fresh air and enjoy a walk down the canal. Technically in Rodley but an easy 20-30 minute walk from Farsley, the Leeds-Liverpool Canal is a great place to stretch your legs. Head towards Liverpool and stop for tea and cake at the canal side tea rooms, or venture towards Leeds and stop for a pint at the Kirkstall Bridge.

If you want a long walk, it’s 6 miles into town from Rodley, which takes around 2 hours. Stay in town for some food and drink and then head back on the train.

Top tip: If you head towards town, grab a coffee from Out Of The Woods at Granary Wharf or if it’s a nice day, sit outside and enjoy a pizza and beer at Waterlane Boathouse!

Climbing at The Depot

Just outside of Farsley, but an easy 10 minute walk away, is The Depot, an indoor climbing and bouldering centre. If you’ve not tried bouldering before, it’s a way of climbing without using ropes. Yes, that’s right, climbing without ropes. Now, this might sound scary but if you’ve not tried it before, it’s a great way to challenge yourself, get moving, and improve strength and fitness.

All abilities, ages and fitness levels are catered for here at The Depot so if you’re a beginner don’t let that stop you. The community here is a welcoming one and if you’re an experienced boulderer, it’s a great place to hone your skills.

Climbing shoes can be hired if you don’t want to invest in your own and if you want to explore other climbing centres in Leeds (there’s another The Depot in Armley and Leeds), get a 10 session pass to use at any The Depot you like!

Alternatively, adult sessions start from £10 with unlimited climbing passes starting at £36pcm!

Browse Art At Sunny Bank Mills

Another of the many things to do in Farsley is take a browse around the art gallery at Sunny Bank Mills. Showcasing independent contemporary art and design in a former cloth warehouse, Sunny Bank Mills Gallery is a gorgeous space full of light.

You can easily spend an hour here browsing the exhibitions – they change every two months as well so there’s always something new to see. You can even buy some art here if a piece particularly catches your eye!

If you’ve seen the art but still want to enjoy the space, pop in for a coffee at the tearoom or browse the shop which is full of beautiful homeware and gifts. You can even bring your laptop in to do some work if you work from home! Wifi and entry to the gallery is completely free, perfect if you’re looking for free things to do in Farsley!
