There were many things I thought I would do in 2023. Horse riding in Croatia wasn’t one of them.
When I was lucky enough to spend 4 days in Split in July, I knew it was going to be a fun trip. On the plan was a tour around the city of Split, a day trip to the beautiful island of Brac, and a morning of horse riding in Podstrana.
And honestly, I couldn’t wait to do all of these but I was really excited to go on horse riding adventure in Croatia.

Seeing the beautiful hills around Split with views of the coast and neighbouring islands? Yes please, what an idyllic way to spend a morning.
I’ve ridden a horse only a couple of times in my life so I was a bit apprehensive. What if the horse was huge? What if I fell off? What if I hated it?
Honestly, that’s what was going through my head on our 15 minute journey from the hotel. Yes, I was excited but there’s always some nerves when doing something new-ish.
Well, I shouldn’t have worried at all. When we arrived at Horseback Riding Podstrana, Evan, the guide for our horse riding experience, took such great care of us. This guy had been working with horses since he was a kid and was super knowledgeable, so we knew we were in safe hands.
When we arrived, and before we did anything, we had some time to be around the horses. There was one in the paddock and five in the stables saddled up and ready to go. Now, I’m not a horsey person but these horses were beautiful. My horse, Mamba, was especially gorgeous. And a little curious and mischievous.
Before we set off on our 1.5 hour journey in the hills of Split, Evan got us kitted out with a helmet and made sure it was secure. Then we got saddled on our horses one by one with Evan helping us make the climb up onto the horse.
We each got told how to ride the horse and Evan answered any questions before we set off.
Then, we were off!
The journey from the stables through the countryside was so, so beautiful. We were so high up and had incredible views of Split, and the neighbouring islands of Brac, Vis, Solta and Hvar. You can also see the town of Trogir! When we were visiting Split, the world’s biggest aircraft carrier was also in the port of Split and we could even see this in the bay.
The track, which is an ancient Roman trail, was fairly steady with not many turns and only a couple of hills. Once we’d been on the horses for a few minutes, any nerves had disappeared, we knew the horses weren’t going to bolt, and we could relax and enjoy the journey.
The horses needed minimal intervention, they just followed the lead horse. My horse, Mamba, was a sweet soul. There were a few times she got distracted with grass on the side of the track – a girl after my own heart, we all need snacks on long journeys. Mamba however also got distracted by the horse in front. It was the lead horse which turned out to be a horse she’d taken fancy to…
“Why does she keep trotting to be near your horse Evan?” I asked when I noticed Mamba liked to keep close to the front.
“Oh, she loves him (Evan’s horse which I can’t remember the name of), she just wants to be near him all the time”
Well, melt my icy heart. How adorable. She didn’t care if she got a tail swished in her face, Mamba just wanted to be near her crush.
When we reached the halfway point, we turned our horses around and had a group photo.
Then it was time to turn back and enjoy more beautiful views on our way back to the stables.
Waiting for us on our return, was a delicious feast of fresh bread, meat, cheese, fruit juice and wine. Just the thing after a 1.5 hour horse riding experience.
Honestly, it was just the most wonderful way to spend a morning. If you’re staying in the city of Split or in nearby Podstrana, I’d highly recommend this activity. It’s a great way to see the countryside and beautiful views over the coast.

Trainers are the most suitable footwear and always wear sunscreen. There’s almost no shade on the horse trail so sunscreen is always a good idea.
