Leeds City Centre is a hive of independent coffee shops. It’s one of the best things about this Northern city. And this doesn’t change when you venture into Leeds’s suburbs.

Fika North in Headingley is pure proof of that. Nestled on a corner in Far Headingley, Fika North is the place to go for a great coffee, a slice of indulgent cake, or an evening cocktail.

Opened in April 2019, by Gemma and Elis Williams, Fika North takes inspiration from the Swedish “Fika” culture. Fika means to take a moment to slow down and appreciate the good things in life, and Fika North encourages just that.

You’ll find Fika North on Otley Road, one of the main roads leaving Leeds towards the north of the city. Journey past the universities of Leeds, past the student hubs of Hyde Park and Headingley, and you’ll reach leafy suburb Far Headingley in Leeds. Fika North is set back just off the main road next to the Three Horseshoes pub.

What’s The Style Of Fika North?

Fika North’s dark aqua exterior unfolds into a welcoming scandi inspired interior with a significant Yorkshire flair. Wooden seats and tables sit alongside panelled and exposed stone walls. A window bar gives the best views for people watching (particularly great on a weekend if people are doing the Otley Run in fancy dress) and the outdoor seating is often shaded by a black and white canopy on a sunny day.

What Kind Of Food Is There Are Fika North?

Post-pandemic, Fika North is very much a bagel and cake place. Served from 9am to 3pm, there’s a small but great menu of hot, toasted bagels including salmon and cream cheese, pastrami and jack cheese, smashed avocado, and vegan ham and pickle.

Alternatively, grab a toasted bagel with chocolate spread, marmite, honey, or jam or for a sweet treat, get yours with peanut butter and banana.

If you want cake to go with your coffee, cakes are brought in daily by local Leeds cake makers and will vary from day to day. However, expect caramel slices, fruit oat bars, muffins and cinnamon buns along with a selection of vegan treats.

What’s The Coffee Like At Fika North?

Fika North pride themselves on sourcing and brewing great speciality coffee from independent coffee roasters around Leeds, Yorkshire, the UK and beyond. Enjoy a latte, espresso, cappuccino, flat white…whatever takes your fancy, Fika North have probably got it. You can also get your order with oat milk and they can add syrup to your drink too.

If you’re not a coffee drinker, don’t worry – Fika North also has a selection of flavoured teas and hot chocolates to enjoy.

Can I Get Take Away Coffee and Food?

Yes, Fika North do take away. In fact during the pandemic, Fika North consistently had queues outside thanks to their incredible takeaway service. This service has continued now Fika North is open as normal. Just order at the bar, wait outside and one of the friendly staff will bring out your coffee, cake or bagel in a bag for you. Take a walk up to The Hollies to enjoy your treats or stop by one of the nearby parks for a picnic if the weather is nice.

Is Fika North Open Evenings?

Yes, Fika North is open Friday and Saturday evenings until 10pm. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine. There’s also a selection of beers available as well as prosecco! Although you can get cocktails before 5pm, after 5pm they’re 2 for £12 which is a great deal!

Other Information about Fika North

Is it dog friendly? Yes.

Is there parking? There is parking for Fika North around the neighbouring streets. Although there is a car park a short walk away, there’s also street parking for free. However, do be aware this is a residential area with some narrow lanes.

How do I get to Fika North? Driving is a great option however if you’re travelling from Leeds, there are plenty of buses that travel up Otley Road on a regular basis. Use the Journey Planner to find out your nearest bus. If you’re travelling from Leeds, this journey should take around 30 minutes.

You can also get a train to Headingley from Leeds Station. Although the train take around 5 minutes, your walk from Headingley Train Station to Fika North is around 25 minutes.
