What Is The Cloud Forest?

The Cloud Forest, opened in 2012, is one of many attractions in the Gardens by the Bay area of Singapore. It’s basically a giant temperature controlled greenhouse that’s home to hundreds of tropical plants from high-altitude regions, including orchids, ferns and carnivorous plants that normally grow in cool, misty mountain environments typically around 2000m above sea level.

The size of the Cloud Forest is huge – around 1.5 times the size of a regular football field – so there’s plenty to explore on your visit. One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk in is the huge indoor waterfall. At around 35 metres tall, it’s one of the tallest indoor waterfalls in the world and cascades down the central “Cloud Mountain”, which the walkways spiral around as you explore the attraction.

Other areas to discover are Orchid Haven, the Tree Top Walkway, Crystal Mountain, Lost World, the Cloud Walk and Waterfall View.

Plan Your Visit To Singapore’s Cloud Forest

How To Get To Singapore’s Cloud Forest

Visiting Singapore’s Cloud Forest is really easy. You simply make your way to Bayfront MRT Station via the Circle or Downtown line on the Singapore MRT. This is the main access point if you want to visit Gardens by the Bay, the Marina Bay Sands, or the waterfront if you want to watch Singapore’s evening light show at Garden Rhapsody Light Show.

From Bayfront MRT Stations, it’s a short walk – around 15 minutes – from Exit B via an underground linkway to Gardens By The Bay. You’ll then cross the Dragonfly Bridge or the Meadow Bridge into the gardens and follow the signposts towards the Cloud Forest.

How To Get Tickets For the Cloud Forest

Getting tickets to the Cloud Forest is really easy. You can buy them at the ticket office located next to the Cloud Forest, or you can buy them online either direct through the Gardens by the Bay website or via activity sites such as GetYourGuide or Viator.

Tickets typically cost around SGD $40–$50 for adults for the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome combined, although prices can vary depending on exhibitions or ticket bundles.

Once inside, you can explore the Cloud Forest for as long as you like, although tickets are single entry, so you can’t re-enter once you leave.

The Best Time To Visit The Cloud Forest

If you’re wondering about the best time to visit the Cloud Forest in Singapore, going earlier in the day is usually a good idea.

We went first thing when we knew it would be quiet. As the Cloud Forest opens at 9am, we were one of the first people in and there was no queue at the ticket office. However, when we left around 90 minutes later, it still didn’t feel crowded and there was no queue although some school groups and tours were starting to arrive.

One thing it is worth noting is as the Cloud Forest is temperature controlled, it’s a great place to escape Singapore’s sometimes oppressive heat and humidity. It’s a pleasant temperature in the Cloud Forest – around 23–25°C – and is very comfortable to walk around in summer clothing.

If you’re planning to stay for a while though, the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors can feel noticeable, so some people prefer to bring a light layer.

Is It Worth Visiting the Cloud Forest At Misting Hour?

What Is Misting Hour?

When you’re looking at visiting the Cloud Forest, you might have seen something called Misting Hour. Like us, you might have no idea what that means. Or you might even question if you should visit during Misting Hour.

Well, luckily I went to try it out so that you can have all the information you need so you can decide if you want to visit the Cloud Forest during the Cloud Forest misting hour in Singapore.

So what is misting hour? Well, because the Cloud Forest is temperature controlled, the humidity inside the Cloud Forest also has to be carefully managed at around 80% – 90% to ensure the plants are getting enough moisture to thrive and survive in the Cloud Forest’s environment.

This means throughout the day, at certain times, little sprinklers shoot out mist all around the Cloud Forest to maintain an optimum amount of moisture in the air. It fills the Cloud Forest with mist, and really makes you feel like you’re walking through a cloud at some points.

Misting usually happens several times throughout the day around the central waterfall and Cloud Mountain. At the time of writing, the usual misting times are 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm, although this can occasionally change depending on maintenance or events.

Is It Worth Visiting Singapore’s Cloud Forest At Misting Hour?

In a word, yes. It’s a really cool experience and definitely adds a different dimension to a visit to the Cloud Forest. It was amazing to see the building fill with mist, and the plants soak up the moisture being pumped into the air. If you can time your visit for one of the Cloud Forest’s misting hours, I’d say do it. It doesn’t cost any more than a regular ticket and is quite a unique experience.

It’s worth timing your visit so that you enter the Cloud Forest before Misting Hour so you have time to wander around and explore. I’d say about 45–60 minutes is a good amount of time to walk around the Cloud Forest and make your way up to the top of Cloud Mountain via the lifts before descending along the Cloud Walk and Treetop Walk during misting hour. If you time your visit this way, you get to enjoy Misting Hour throughout all levels of the Cloud Forest as you descend back to ground level.

What I Loved About The Cloud Forest at Garden’s By The Bay

Apart from Misting Hour, the Cloud Forest is a very calm place. In a busy city like Singapore, that quiet can be really appreciated. It was just wonderful wandering around, looking at various tropical plants and seeing birds fly past that had sneaked into the Cloud Forest. I also loved the temperature. As someone who found Singapore’s heat a bit too much at times, the Cloud Forest was a welcome cool retreat for a couple of hours.

What Else Can I See At the Cloud Forest?

There’s a lot to see at Singapore’s Cloud Forest. While we were there there was a dinosaur themed exhibition inspired by Jurassic World, a real fun treat especially for kids who looked fascinated with the life-sized moving dinosaurs dotted around the Cloud Forest.

You’ll also find the huge indoor waterfall right as you walk in, as well as the aerial walkways that wrap around the Cloud Mountain. The Cloud Walk and Treetop Walk give fantastic views across the whole greenhouse and are one of the highlights of visiting.

At the very top level, known as the Lost World, there’s also an outdoor area with plants that thrive in cooler mountain environments, as well as viewpoints where you can look down across the entire greenhouse.

If you’re planning your time in Gardens by the Bay, most visitors spend around 1–2 hours exploring the Cloud Forest.

Should You Combine Your Visit With A Trip To The Flower Dome?

If you’re visiting the Cloud Forest, you might want to combine your visit with a trip to the Flower Dome and the OCBC Walkway at Supertree Grove. Visiting all three makes for a really great day of exploring.

If you wanted to combine your visit with the Supertrees light show, you could easily spend all day visiting Gardens by the Bay, go for dinner in Marina Bay Sands, and then wander back for the light show.

We visited the Flower Dome in conjunction with the Cloud Forest which was really fun. We sadly didn’t visit the Floral Fantasy, but it’s something we might add next time; however we don’t feel like we missed out. We’d definitely visit Cloud Forest again if we do another holiday in Singapore in the future.

Final Thoughts: Is the Cloud Forest in Singapore Worth Visiting?

If you’re visiting Gardens by the Bay anyway, timing your visit for Cloud Forest misting hour in Singapore is absolutely worth it. It transforms the whole space and makes the Cloud Forest feel much more atmospheric, almost like walking through a tropical mountain cloud.

Since it doesn’t cost anything extra, it’s one of those small travel experiences in Singapore that’s easy to plan but makes your visit much more memorable.
